On Beards and Blacksmithing

What is it about blacksmiths and beards? Many blacksmiths seem to have SOME form of facial hair. Whether it's a goatee, a mustache, or a full blown birds nest of a beard, whiskers seem to be everywher in our community. I myself have a full beard that is reaching wizard status. At this point it's not even practical. I have to tuck it in or it frequently catches fire the second I stop paying attention to it...not practical at all! Still I would feel weird without it, and I feel it complements my blacksmithing image nicely. But I can't help but wonder, where did this beard trend come from? I have some inkling of an idea that it comes from a civil war notion of a blacksmith. But it could also be a video game thing, or something inspired by mythology. If you just google hephaestus you will see many images of the poor greek smith with facial hair. It also seems like us younger folks tend to be more bearded just in general. Anyways this isn't intended to be a high yield post, it's more of a stream of consiouse thought dump on something I have noticed lately.

Are Really long beards practical?

Will I keep my beard?
