Unique Anvils For Sale

I was reading a blacksmith thread that veered into the territory of unusual anvils for sale over on weldingweb.com , and it got me thinking just how easy it is to repurpose an object as an anvil. In order to be an anvil, an object really only needs to meet a couple requirements:
  1. Needs To be at least as hard as mild steel, preferably a little harder
  2. Needs to be sturdy and stable
  3. Preferably has a hard edge for fullering, space for a 1” hardy hole is nice too.
And that about it, and honestly the third item is optional. It always bothers me watching new smiths fuss over “the best” anvil. There is no best anvil. The best anvil is one that works and gets your butt out into the shop. If you haven't clicked on it already, I recommend checking out the thread above. It’s an interesting story about a man in nova scotia who bought a big hunk of ….. Something. He has been using it as an anvil but wasn’t sure what it was. Turns out, no one else knows what it is either...and it doesn’t matter! So next time you are looking to buy an anvil, just remember that it doesn’t need to be pretty; it doesn’t need to be a london style anvil. No one else needs to know that it’s an anvil. It just needs to be hard, sturdy, and stable. Don’t look for perfection, look for utility. Get out there and start smithing. If you are a beginner, don’t sweat the perfect anvil, just go buy an anvil already! Hell, make one! Anyways, I’m almost done. This is a pretty straight forward topic, it’s not something that needs pages and pages of content. If you have read this far you are a crazy person, I like you though. Happy smithing!
